Shortly before his death in 1952, Alan Turing wrote to his friend and fellow mathematician, Norman Routledge.
The only solace I can find for this irreparable loss is my inhability to understand the mentality of those who charged him, of those who delivered the products. The sens of that alternative to prison is probably similar to the sens of actual chemical castration for very dangerous sexual criminals. Turing mentioned a "young" man. Adult age was at the time fixed at 21 and maybe mutual consent was not yet a notion used by the law.
As a gay computer scientist, Turing is my hero.
