What a wonderful post. I hope we will continue basic scientific research in the coming years.

This letter has been used as the basis for several educational lesson plans over the years. However, it would be interesting to know how this young woman herself viewed the response and the achievements of - and benefits derived from - the space program over the course of her lifetime. Unfortunately, it appears she passed away in 2022.

Thank you Shaun for this enlightened young woman's letter. Not to steal any of her thunder, but this is something I have espoused in my writing in recent decades. The day she wrote this letter was my tenth birthday. Today is my seventy-third. How on Earth can we fail to protect our environment, our people, and our animals from this plethora of threats we're facing, the poster child for which is climate change, a fire breathing dragon descending on us without mercy? Where is this canny mind in this era of no astute leadership?

Agreed. A contemptuous, defensive, emotionally immature, and truly unhelpful response.
