Depression is a plague. Neuroscientists have much less understanding of its real mechanics than the shrinks and drug companies would lead you to believe. Treatment for mild-moderate depression is moderately useful. The severe dysphoria described in these letters is quite tenacious and resistant. Compared to cancer and heart disease, we only invest pennies on research into mood disorders (including anxiety which can be a killer).
