Oh to have a correspondence like that, to express deeply about the joys and sorrows of life. I've been writing to a friend in Scotland that I met in Kibbutz Usha for over forty years. Her letters were so rich with personal details as well as a treasure trove of photos, postcards, and wonderful little gifts from her wee village in Scotland, Auchenblae. When I remember my vapid letters, it embarrasses me. Her "care packages" were so special to me, I put them in a scrapbook that is five-six inches thick and growing. She hasn't written for awhile nor answered my letters in months. It grieves me that she may have died or is otherwise unable to continue writing. And no way for me to learn the truth.
Merry Christmas, Shaun. May all perils swerve around you in the coming year. Thank you for this journey into the night. The stars are indeed brighter that we imagine. Out in the country, they blaze like the sun.
I live in Wells, Maine, home of the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Many days I walk the paths, with friends, with dogs, alone, and try to remember to thank Ms. Carson for all the work she did for our planet.
