Wow! Mr. Usher! This LETTERS OF NOTE about the blazing hell that copy editors can wreck upon a manuscript was like drinking mother's milk! Thank you.

As one of those hellacious editors, I feel both guilt and the pain reflected by Ms. Carroll, Mr. Steinbeck and the others. But surely there is some little good, in moderation, that we meddlers can do for the writer, the copy and the reader. For example, wouldn't “wreak” work better here?
