There’s a wonderful song about this. “Christmas in the Trenches” by John McCutcheon. ❤️

Amazing! This really highlights the craziness of war, and what's possible.

There are a number of very good books on this amazing and inspiring event. One said the military took steps to prevent this from happening again!

Shaun, this is crazy that this happened...crazy cool! To think that this could happen is such a breath of fresh air, especially in today's day and age. I understand that both sides needed to remove the soldiers on the front lines and bring new soldiers in when the war resumed because they were not willing to go out and fight....WOW! Thanks for sharing.

At one point along the front, the Christmas truce started because the German troops started singing Silent Night in German -- it was originally a German carol, written by an Austrian -- and the British troops joined in. I always think of the Christmas Truce whenever I hear that carol. There’s also a wonderful poem about the Christmas Truce by Carol Ann Duffy.

This was so beautiful to read.

This is heartbreaking that they were able to do this and then return to killing each other. I saw a wonderful movie years ago called A Midnight Clear but I believe that happened during WWII.

Interesting-- I didn’t know that this also happened in WW2.

I just looked up the movie A Midnight Clear and saw that it was based on a novel by William Wharton. I don’t know if he was writing the story based on actual events. Sorry.

The carol "It came upon the midnight clear" was written by a Unitarian in response to the violence and slaughter of the American Civil War. It is quite applicable to all wars, though.

I looked up the novel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Midnight_Clear_(novel)

Thank you for sharing that. It all makes perfect sense.

I didn’t realize it either but TM remembered the movie I saw years ago and discovered that.
