That letter not only shows great generosity, but perfectly defines what makes so much American comedy, particularly of the SNL variety, so sour--'mean-spirited--and ultimately forgettable.

I haven't been able to listen to modern comics because of that snarky stuff. The old 1950s comics were stellar in their portrayal of people, mostly their spouses BYW, in an ironic manner. Allan King, for example, told how he was taking a shower and his wife yelled "Don't use the towels!" He said, "So I'm supposed to dab myself with the toilet paper?"

It is always a pleasure to read about someone at or near the top, that will take a moment, to help someone, who could be on their way to joining them.

Now THIS is the way a critique should go. He focused on the positive skills first and came back to them at the end to emphasize the direction Michael should go. So many times, that's exactly what a person needs. Where to I go from here and how to I get there. In the middle, Bill focused on the negative but spread it out as a style of comedy he doesn't prefer. That's other comics' stuff. Michael could be better than that.
