Back in the 70s the Welsh entertainer Max Boyce sang about the Welsh fly-half factory producing such legendary 10s as Barry John, Phil Bennett, & Jonathan Davies.
Now Australia seems to have developed the Temu version of this conveyer belt, with 5/8s such as Gordon, Lolesio, Bowen, Donaldson and so on. They’re indisputably good, but never seem to make the quantum leap to greatness.
I’m an old prop (old enough to remember Boyce lionising The Pontypool Front Row), & while I can identify the issue, knowing how to get more out of this apparent mass of 10s is beyond my limited capabilities.
In my defence, Stephen Larkham, objectively a great player in that position, also doesn’t seem to be able to maximise the performance of players in that jumper. (No song about Bernie, but I did play with his Dad.)
So here we have that quintessential Wallabies problem - we can identify that there’s an issue, but no one seems to be able to fix it.
This is such an astounding array of attitudes and voices and cleverness and pithiness! Brought back memories of being in London in August 2003 - it was 93 Fahrenheit (about 34 Celsius) and I had a high garret room in the Hotel Russell and could barely breathe for the heat. All the fans had already been given out so I made it through breath by breath that night. But felt lucky to do so, given the devastation caused by that then-record-breaking European heatwave.
I can’t imagine these souls lasting more than a minute in Andalucía. It’s 36 today and going to get progressively hotter and I love. My father’s South Indian genes sure help!

Over to you, greater rugby brains than mine.

Dear Ms Jane Austen,
I beg you, please do visit Chennai. We are in a constant state of inelegance nearly all year round.
Yours glowingly,
Avinash

This is pure deliciousness!
I wonder how they react today!
