Sullivan Ballou writes home

The following letter was written on this day in 1861. It became famous in 1990 after featuring in Ken Burns’ wildly popular documentary series, The Civil War. A clip from that show, in which a slightly different version of this letter is read, exists on the YouTubes. Ballou’s letter can also be found in the original Letters of Note book.
