Writing is also objective. If there aren't rules that both writer and reader follow then you are only approximating your meaning. You may be a special little snowflake with your own quirky understanding of the semicolon, but ignorance is not style.

This is so true. I recently had a friend tear apart my novel, counting the number of times I used certain words.
